Shawn M. Riley (Director of Theatre) is in his seventh year at Ballard High School, coming to Seattle after a long successful stint at Capital High School in Olympia, WA.
A graduate of Minot State University (Major: Bs.Ed.in English and Communication Arts, Minor: Humanities), he also studied Art History and Classical Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, finally receiving his MFA in Directing and Acting from The University of Portland. While at UP, Mr. Riley was nominated to participate in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition, and was twice named one of the top 15 actors in the nation by the American College Theatre Festival/Kennedy Center in Washington DC. This achievement coupled with his achievements in the music department led to the creation of “The Shawn M. Riley Award” for outstanding contribution to Theatre and Music. This award is given annually to a graduating senior.
Mr. Riley has directed and designed at the high school, university, and community levels with some of his favorite projects being Lonely Planet, The Love of The Nightingale, Les Miserables, Little Women: The Musical, Cabaret, Songs for A New World, A New Brain, and Batboy. Graduates of Mr. Riley’s have gone onto major acting and performance schools in the country which have led them to Broadway, film, and television. He could not be more proud of their successes.
With over 70 shows under his belt, multiple 5th Avenue Musical Theatre nominations (including four Best Musical and Best Director nods), invitations to participate in the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland (2007 and 2013), Mr. Riley is a proud performer and instructor who can be heard touting his students’ accomplishments by saying, “I don’t do high school theatre. I do theatre with high school students!”
